The Canyon CIty is the last resort for human survival. After humans trashed the earths environment, they built this artificial canon environment to sustain life. A dome covers the city which produces an artificial sky for the inhabitants below.

The only thing thats protecting those humans from death from the surrounding environment outside of the canyon is the artificial sky and the fear to litter. Normally what humans would do would be to move to a different planet instead of making a city inside of a hole.
