this is now broken thanks to a new snapshot with this change "Removing a block with a Redstone Torch on it will not remove the Redstone Torch" Without that, this can't be built. So never mind!

the upcoming 1.5 update has a new light detector block that emits a redstone signal when it is light. Inverting that signal, one can use redstone lamps to light up areas automatically at night. This is a simple, symmetrical streetlamp that is about as compact as one can make it.

See screenshots, should be obvious from them how to make it.

captain sparkles shows a better design he found on reddit, using a pisten and the new redstone block and the light sencor..., its more compact. still nice design :-)

But still, I didn't know that it was possible to put redstone torches on those blocks, so thanks anyway! :D

it's not exactly. I had a regular stone block where it is and put the torches on the sides of that. Then broke the stone block and put the detector block there. The torches stay and don't break if there is something below them (that's why the four fences under the torches)

Light detector Block! As I said in the comment on Chat bubbles mod it will come out in 1.5! :D (Then I won't need this mod, right? Because I have the snapshot 13w01a.) EDIT: Just figured out that this isn't a mod xD And my sister Unfortunately already thought about this idea yesterday. EDIT 2: Nice idea, still :P My idea was to create a shop that opens in the sunrise and closes in the sunset. And it worked! :) Also, my next idea is to make a "easy to make" clock for minecraft 1.5! :)
