The PBY Catalina (known as the Canso in Canada) was a flying boat seaplane built by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation used as a maritime patrol bomber and search and rescue aircraft during World War II. It first flew as the XP37-1 prototype on March 28, 1935, when it was selected by the U.S. Navy. Throughout its wartime service, the Catalina was used for maritime patrol, naval interdiction, and even anti-submarine warfare. At one point, the PBY acted as a commercial airliner for Qantas Airways that took passengers non-stop from Suva, Fiji to Sydney, Australia over a course of two days (hence the flight being called the "Double Sunrise". It would also take passengers from Perth, Australia to Colombo, Sri Lanka but had to be in radio silence to keep quiet around the Japanese. PBY Catalinas were last retired from military service in 1979 by the Brazilian Air Force but are still used in the modern-day as waterbombers in aerial firefighting.
