*4/14/2014 A new updated version of the 'world save' of this map has been added. You want to replace this with the old one if you already downloaded! Also you will need to download one very specific build of biomes o plenty mod for the instructions to work properly. See update log!!!!

*Attention!!! Please Follow My Instructions Carefully For The "Set-Up" Of This Custom Map Before Playing It In Minecraft!!!!!!!!!!
This Map Is Integrated With The "Biomes O Plenty" Mod And Requires Some Simple Modifications To The Config File. Don't Panic! I'll Show You Exactly What To Do. It Is Not Hard. "IF" You do Not Follow My Special Instructions, The World Will Be Corrupted. Cthulhul Mythos Fantasy Map Description:

This is my Cthulhu Mythos Fantasy Custom Map. After over 150 hours of meticulous effort (spanning four months), to make this map the best it can be, it is now complete. I used only WorldPainter software to create this map. I am here to represent those who spend a great deal of time creating custom maps in WorldPainter. I'm not doing this for the "level up" on Planet Minecraft. I do it for my own pleasure and satisfaction. To me this is a form of "Art" because I spend a great deal of time and energy and skill in creating a unique experience for the player of my custom map.

The inspiration for this map comes from manny sources. The title and main theme of the map are inspired by H.P. Lovecrafts Cthulhu Mythos. I even thought about doing a let's play series that involves pretending that I am in some of Lovecrafts macbre stories. This map could certainly qualify as a backdrop for that kind of video let's play. The Arctic coninent of the north represents "At the Mountains of Madness". The northern mountains and river vallie of the main continent are the backdrop of "Whisperer in Darkness".

Further from the theme of "Cthulhu Mythos", I think I have achieved a markable feeling of 'mysteriousness" in this map. Employing a variety of techniques to build that feeling. It has secrets to be found. It has wonder. It has realism. It has danger and more still that give it "mystery".

One of the most important qualities of this custom map is that it is fully integrated with the "Biomes O Plenty" mod. This means that many of the custom biomes from that mod are part of this map. Also, if you follow my directions carefully for the "set-up" of this map, you will find 'Biomes O Plenty' biomes generating beyond the edges of this map. Which makes for the complete integration of that mod into this custom world.

I also take a lot of inspiration from various 'dramatic landscapes' of the world. You will find dramatic landscapes all over this map. There is so much to explore.

If you explore enough you just my find a bit of Fantasia from the movie "The Never Ending Story". I'll leave that to you to discover!

This custom world is created for a 'modded' Minecraft. Specifically for the "Biomes O Plenty" mod. This is a big part of what I wanted in this map. As, it was created to fulfull the exact desires of what I want in a custom map. It's a MC dream come true for me. I hope you like it also!

Because this map is quite large, it takes up a lot of Minecraft Memory when playing I find. I only have 4GB on the laptop I use. Having more than that would be ideal! Just sayin! ;)

Here are some of the key features of this map that make it trully epic:

- Fully integrated with the "Biomes O Plenty" mod

-Full of dramatic and stunning landscapes to explore

- Diverse array of trees and forests

- Mysterious

- Complex system of  custom caves that are mysterious, beautfiul, and challenging to explore

- Vast regions of high rugged mountains

- Rivers that flow long distances

-Many cool waterfalls

-Smooth Snow

- One large mainland continent

-Several additional land continents and islands including: The Arctic, Lush island filled with giant oak trees, Japanese island (contains bamboo forest biome)

- Smooth transition to outer world map

- Polished, realistic, and overwhelmingly Epic!

*A point about realism of this map...Even though this map was terra formed for a high levels of realism and beauty (you will find some of the finest pieces of dramatic landscapes and beautiful examples of terraforming in Minecraft in this map). However it was created to 'play Minecraft'; not simply as a 'model-for-show' or a pleaser for diomonds on Planet Minecraft. You will find random pits and pools of lava and water on the map where they shouldn't be. These ugly pits were not created by me. They are created by Minecraft as part of the "populate algorythum". WorldPainter can not tell Minecraft to not add these pits. The game does it automatically. But, I will not have a map that is not populated by Minecraft. That would make for a stale lifeless world that feels more like walking through a steril model. And like I said this map was meant to be played and tobe populated by Minecraft (which also means populated by mods.) It was created to be played with mods as well . Mods also require the game to "populate" the terrain in order to see the features of the mods apear in the world. I have preserved the terra forming from the game "population" where it is most important like the beautiful cliffs and rock faces. Everywhere else is populated by Minecraft (water pools and pits and all), Just wanted to make this point clear. :)

Download And Set-Up instructions For This Map:

*Important! This map as it is now is created for Minecraft 1.6.4. This means it is in a 1.6.4 seed and it will not contain 1.7 biomes. The number-1 requirment to have installed with MC to play this map is the "Biomes O Plenty" mod for Minecraft 1.6.4. version "1.1.2.51".
And it will require some minor tweaks in the BOP config file. So......
*Follow my "Four-steps to madness" below to have everything work according to plan 3:) :

Step-1
: I recommend that you start first with "forge and optifine" installed together with your Minecraft. It may be also a good idea to use "magic Launcher" with these so you can switch easily between MC versions with different mods installed. I will not show you how to install this "base-set-up". However, I will point you to some great tutorials for doing this:

http://youtu.be/FiSzQlBlc5M

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0Vb7vEHQfA&index=7&list=FLrvh6QMUVi7NoiozJMRP37A

Link to MC Forge: http://files.minecraftforge.net/

Link to Optifine:www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-174-optifine-hd-d1-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af-and-much-more/page__hl__%20optifine

*You will need to download the version of MC Forge that is recommended for the version of Optfine you are downloading. So you want to go to the optifine site first and download.

*I also recommend using the "Conquest" texture pack for the best look of this custom world. Conquest uses a special metadata that gives various blocks in Minecraft multiple textures for individual blocks. So for example the rocks and cliffs in my map have a range of different textures from "dark-stone" to "light stone" to "Mossy stone" etc... Of couse you can use the texture pack of your choice! But in order to get the results as in the photos above and for the kind of textures I created in this map, use Conquest: www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1452033-174-32x32-conquest-wip-weekly-updates/

Step-2: Download "Biomes O Plenty" mod for MC 1.6.4 version "1.1.2.51"

*Note: You must download this specific build of Biomes O Plenty in the link directly below for this to work. Because the config file text that I will have you replace only works for this specific BOP build that I am using. Each different version of that mod has different config text. To make this easier, I have provided my own download link for this specific version of BOP:

Mod link: www.mediafire.com/download/4u5s8uiti73gzzh/BiomesOPlenty-universal-1.6.4-1.1.2.51(1).jar

Put the downloaded file of Biomes O Plenty in your "mods" folder of your .minecraft. (This is why you should have "Forge" installed because it is that easy!)

Step-3: Some tweaks with the configuation of Biomes O Plenty....Relax!.......I know! It will make you stronger! ;)

On one of the "update logs" of this project is labeled "Config Text". Click on that tab to view the text and Copy everything that is in that box (ctrl + c) and save it somewhere on your computer as a word or text document or on your hand or somewhere that you can access it later.

Open your ".minecraft" folder (I have a shortcut for mine on my desktop.) (Windows) Click "Start" - Type in the search box "%appdata%" - click on "Roaming" - and click on ".minecraft".

Once in your " .minecraft", open up the file "config". Next, you will see a file called "biomes o Plenty". Open that folder! Next, open the folder that sais "ids".

Because I have changed some of the "id numbers" for the biomes for this map, you will need to copy and paste my config file into yours so you get the right biomes as I intended for this map. It is mostly the same as the original config text with exception to that a hand full of the biome id's have been swaped with each other.

So you have copied all the text that is in the "Config Text" update log. Now that you have the "ids" folder open, erase all of it's contents and replace it with the text contents that I gave you. And click "save". You can even close it and again open it up to confirm that it's saved by scrolling down to where it sais "Cherry Blossom Grove ID" and if the number next to it sais "=184", then you are on the right track! :) Don't Close out of the "biomesoplenty" config file yet!

You're almost done!

Next, we need to tell the game to generate "Biomes O Plenty" biomes when we explore beyond the borders of the custom part of the map.  Even though this map is in the "Default World Type". Because Biomes O Plenty mod normally uses it's own "Biomes O Plenty - Wold Type" to generate the biomes in that mod. But there is currently no way for me to customize my map for that specific world type. So instead we must get into the config file and tell it what we want to do.  This part is optional but very very simple. If you want the game to generate default MC 1.6.4 biomes, (you will still have many of the BOP biomes in the custom map but not all and therefore not have access to every aspect of BOP mod.) skip this little bit and go to "Step-4" below.

With the "biomesoplenty" config directory still open ( .minecraft > config > biomesoplenty), open the text file "terraingen". Scroll down tuards the bottome (it's a little ways up from the bottom) and find the following text:

"
"biome settings" {
    B:"Add Biomes To Default World"=false
    B:"Enhanced Vanilla Biomes"=true  "

Where it sais "Add Biomes To Default World"=false , replace the "false" with "true". so it sais: "Add Biomes To Default World"=true

Make sure to save this file the way you have changed it (file > save)

Now you can close out of all of that and move to the final step! Yay! :D

Step-4:

Download my custom map "Cthulhu Mythos" world save file via the "Download" button above. It is a ".rar" file so you will need to extract it with "winrare" or whatever unzipping thingy bob you have. Place that file (after unzipping it) into your "saves" folder in your ".minecraft" that you should by now have a shortcut to for ease of access. Now play MC and enjoy! :)

*I plan to create versions of this map for MC 1.7 . Both Modded versions and vanilla versions to make things easier for everybody.

*You can help me by taking one last step after you play this map for the first time by letting me know the coords of where you spawn in this map (I just want confirmation!). Just let me know in the "comments" box below! That'd be great!  I only need a couple of you to confirm this.

For your self you can confirm that the right biomes are going to load up by adventuring to the following coords:
(-12,568, 11,956). If you go there and it is "Cherry Blossom Grove" (Press F3 to find what biome you are in....it's marked by deciduous trees with pink leaf blocks), everything is as it should be. :)

5 Update Logs

Issues and a New Updated World Save Download Created : 04/14/2014 5:47:19 pmApr 14th, 2014

If anyone downloaded my map and played it yet, I want to let you know
that there was a problem with that save that I missed
before I uploaded that file. Vary Sorry about this! Some the the terrain
regions were not populating Some are and some aren't. For example around
the area where you spawn, the biomes are not populating with animals
and the trees that go with that biome ..etc. This doesn't apply to the
custom trees however.

*I have just fixed this problem and created a new world save file for download.

I have done a thorough fly-around of this world save and confirmed that everything looks to be as it should be. I urge anyone who has downloaded the first world save file, to download and replace with this new one as it is complete and so much better than before. As before, parts of the world were like walking around a sterile inert 3D model.

*I discovered one other problem in the "set-up" instructions. When I have you copy the config text below into your biomes o plenty "ids" config file, well that text only works for (1) single specific build of the mod ( "Biomes O Plenty 1.6.4 1.1.2.51").  Any other version will crash the game even if you copy and past my config text. I know it's annoying! Each version of the mod has different config text. So you must use the exact build version in order for my modifications to the config file to work properly and have the game load properly. I have changed the instructions to give you a specific download link of my specific version of biomes o plenty. You can still find that same version on the official download page if you match the version with mine "biomes o plenty for MC 1.6.4 version "1.1.2.51". If want to install a later version, you can but it will be more time consuming as you will need to go into the config file and manually match all the id numbers instead of copy and past what I have for you.

Sorrey if this has inconvenianced any of you who have already downloaded and followed my initial instructions! Very sorry about that! Everything should work properly now. I am even including a tutorial video of the "set-up" where I am going through the process step by step to help you and proved it works. Enjoy! :)

Sent you an email, love your map bud! I am trying to get it working with 1.7.10, lets hope it's possible lol

Unfortunately this map is not compatible with 1.7.10. Not that you couldn't play it at all! However it was created exclusively for MC 1.6.4 to be integrated with Biomes O Plenty for 1.6.4. It was designed to be a map for people playing a lot of mods together. Hence why 1.6.4! What does that mean and why would there be a problem using it for 1.7.10?

First, many of the biomes on the map are Biomes O Plenty custom biomes. If the map isn't set up as instructed and for 1.6.4 with Biomes O Plenty....I don't know what those custom biomes will be or if any biomes will be there at all. They won't be the biomes indended for sure!

Second, the northern 'arctic continent' has vast layers of 'packed ice' block from Biomes o Plenty mod. These layers are deep (50 blocks in many places). Without this map set up properly, those ice layers will be missing. That's 50 blocks deep of material stretching vast regions that won't be there. It will look quite bad on that part of the map.

Third, It has a 1.6.4 world 'seed'. I'm pretty sure it will remain a 1.6.4 seed even if you load it in 1.7.10!

If none of this bothers you too much ....you can always try it! I don't recomend it though...especially for servival!

The only suggestion I can offer (I have not tried this myself) is to copy the 'config page' that I've provided in the log. You could try matching the id's from that page to the Biomes O Plenty 1.7.10. This could be tricky and I also hear that MC 1.7 doesn't use 'ID's" the same way as before. I honestly don't know what that change in MC is all about. Hopefully it would be as simple as making the numbers match! Sometimes with these mods...the structure of the config file changes slightely that it doesn't always work to just copy and past....this is why I have people use 1 specific build of BOP for this map. Good Luck! And please let me know if you are able to make a conversion to BOP 1.7.10! BTW, if you do install BOP 1.7.10.....you would see the custom biomes. They just wouldn't be the right ones. But, if you see "Cherrey Blossom grove" close to where you spawn....you know it's correct.

After following your directions and using your config you provided, I've had zero luck unfortunately. :/
This doesn't of course mean it's impossible to work with 1.7.10, it just means I couldn't get it to work. When I booted the map up on my server, it showed every single space was filled up with what looked to be a square building or something... I'll take a screenshot sometime later. My client then began to lag immensly to the point that it and the server crashed.

Hi I didn't forget about your comment. Since it may be a while yet before I'll have the time and energy to do another video tutorial (these buggers take me a week usually and pretty much doing nothing else for that week but working on the video) I"ve left a writen description for how to do custom biomes in the comments of this video about this map: (Ad link removed)

Why has this not gotten more attention and praise?
This is one of the largest and most creative maps I have ever seen.
The effort he/she put into this is insane. 150 hours, it says. This person spent 150 hours on this gigantic, ingenious, and downright amazing map. This map deserves much more popularity.

I don't know why it hasn't gotten more attention. Pictures, Videos, links, announcements, and only a trickle of people finding it since I published a week ago. I thank the rest of the activity will be a "long-tail". As It will be found by certain people over time who will appreciate it. Thanks for your support! If nothing else, I'm enjoying playing this map a lot myself...and it's cool that others are too! :)

I am working on an extention of the map. Another large continent beside it of equal size. I have so much ocean adjecent to it that I could extend several continence of equal size. This extention I plan on making it more a large plains/forest/snowy mountain continent. Rather than trying to cram everything into one. In this way, there could be specific additional continence of a generale kind of terrain and climate. And this means I get to create larger areas of land of a specific type. And closer to actual 'scale'. So instead of having a small sample of a terrain type. You'd get much more of it. If all goes well, I'll be able to just "merge" this extended land with the existing world save of the first Cthulhu Mythos....creating the expanded whole. And hopefully not running out of memory. Another way of going about it is offering as well the 'extended portion as it's own map'. Then, providing instructions for anyone to download it and (using worldpainter), they themselves would be able to merge it with their already existing world. So you wouldn't have to lose your builds from the first map.

*I just Loaded this world and am finding that biomes around the region of spawn are not "populating". No animals. None of the trees of the custom biomes for example "Cherrey Blossom Grove". Don't be fooled be the custom trees. They appear of couse. But the biomes didn't populate. This is not good. Anyone else having this issue? I'm looking into this right now and should have it resolved shortly. It's quite possible that I have to to edit the map and provide a new download. Did anyone performe the test I proscribed of searching for "cherry blossome grove" to and looking for the trees there?

Good news: This map will have biomes from the "Biomes O Plenty" mod included throughout the map. I tested in worldpainter adding these custom biomes and it works. I'm very happy about that. It might be good for me to have multiple verstions of this map with and without the biomes o plenty biomes for those who don't want to install the mod or are strictly vanilly people.

Well thanks for your interest and support! I can assure you this map is a genuine "pet-project" of mine. I have not intentions of giving up because I want to see this map through to completion and play on it and for others to enjoy. The only thing that has slowed me down is other commitements and responsibilities offline. At the moment I am beginning to add the custom trees. After that the biomes and cave systems and wrapping the whole project up. Things are moving faster now that the more time consuming work of terraforming is behind me. I have some good news and bad news. The bad news is I had to exclude the second large continent from the map as my computer doesn't have enough RAM to export a map that big. I left the original photo that includes the continent I had to cut out. That continent will be it's own other map later. The good good news is there should be no border to the map when I'm finished. There should be a seamless trassition into the infinate out world of the custom map.

Another major change in the game plan for this map! It's too big. That probably was a no brainer! It is so big, that now when I export even a small portion of the map, it runs out of memory. It is not working when I follow the instructions to give WorldPainter more memory. It sucks!

So here is what I'm going to do with this huge map. I'm going to make two separate maps out of it. Actually it was fine the first time when I just had one large continent. When I added the second large continent.....it was too much.

Also I am going to be tweaking with some of the land features and making them better. As updates to WorldPainter and also improvements of my abilities allow me to do things much better than ever before.

Thanks for your support! I'm working on it right now. It's actually almost twice that size. I added a second large main continent. And I'm getting close to finishing the terraforming. I'm eager to finish this cause it will be really cool!

How to you get mountains like that? Can you show me the custom brushes?

Practice.. and picturing in my mind how I might approach the task...then trying it out...rinse and repeat! ...There is no easy answer. I use a mixture of techniques. Techniques usually are a mixture of laying down a texture....raising land with an assortment of custom brushes......and using the smooth tool. And going over the whole thing with a fine tooth comb to make sure the gradient of slope is not too extreme for certain areas that need to have a more gradual slope.

If you are going to use world painter...to get good mountains ....and not some outrageously expensive program like World Machine. You are going to have to develop some skill with using the tools in World Painter. It is almost an art depending on the level of detail and quality of maps you are creating in WP.

You'll need to build a collection of custom brushes. There are some decent custom brushes that are downloadable. I have ended up making most of my own brushes so that I can get the terrain I want.

I am going to do a YouTube tutorial on mountains once I finish terraforming this map. Until then, I am directing my focus on moving forward with this project.

I hope I can help you and others in this shared interest of creating custom worlds. I have some tutorials already on YouTube. And more to come.

I use the pyramid tool, then smooth the pyramid out with the raise brush. Creates decent mountains, but no decent enough for me :P

I don't know if you will find this helpful Lucus, but I have been making a video tutorial series for WP. All the links to those videos are in the description of this project. I have a link in the description box of those videos to a set of custom brushes or some of the custom brushes I use. These include some nice looking mountain ranges. It is a lot better than the default brushes for mountains. And if you don't know how to install these custom brushes into WP...there are plenty of videos on youtube that will show you how. It is very easy.

That's a good idea to use Worldmachine to make brushes. I really need to get about learning WM to do that!

Oh about custom brushes....you know everything's findable on youtube.....also.....go to google and search "mountains heightmap". Then click on the "images" tab. These black and white heightmaps are the format used for custom brushes. You can always crop parts of these images and tweak with the brightness/contrast as needed. Edges of brush should be black.

Thanks! Yah I'm trying not to burn my self out. I just complete a new section each day and keep reminding my self how epic it's going to be when it's done....and also the faster I finish it the faster I get to play MC again.

Thanks Tokzy for your support! It is time consuming. I'm still terraforming after over a month of starting this project. One may think that terraforming a map of this size should not take that long. I have high standandards for it. It's hard to know what is going on from the picture. The picture spans many many thousands of blocks. Mountains take up the most of my time. Because there are a lot of mistakes that can happen like subtle dips or pits that appear on the map.....get in game and it's a very deep ugly pit. Or find out that slopes are much steeper than intended. So there is a lot of correcting and just going over with a fine tooth comb and making sure everything is right.

I'll see about updating with a picture that includes the new continent I'm adding.

Looking good. I hope to see some wonderful things with this as I am also a Lovecraftian follower, as are some of my friends who would love to see something magical come from this. The Mountains of Madness are a testament to your skills and Ill be watching this to see its development~

I thought I replied to this comment. ...hmmm.....well I guess you will get a different reply. Thanks bro for your support! It's a big project for sure! In addition to the Cthulhu Mythos theme....juxtaposed with that is a huge world that I can best describe as Hyrul x 1000. Or rather I am taking the fun adventure feelings of Hyrul from Zelda and enhancing it as much as possible. It also has many places on the map inspired by some of the most beautiful places on the globe. It's really one huge land of fantasy.
