Euonymus, settled just north of Sicily, experienced a turbulent history as the Aeolian islands fell under the control of one group after another. Coming under the control of the Greeks, and then a Carthaginian alliance, the island finally passed over to the Roman nation. Under them, Euonymus flourished. With the absolute collapse of the Western Empire, the island switched hands to many corrupt rulers, and suffered consistent attacks from some of the most brutal pirates of subsequent eras: the Vandals and the Barbary corsairs.
