I have decided to share a little something nice for the WorldPainter community! This is my 'desert' custom brush pack. Download them...use them for your custom map making. But do not re-distribute these without crediting me!
Many of these brushes I created from scratch and others are based on real-world terrain. Do something cool with them my friends! I have faith in you! :)
Here's what's in the bag:
-(1) Pack of (10) 'high-resolution' heightmaps, the resolution and quality of which is very hard to find for free.
-Ultra Realistic and a varied assortment of topographical
features allowing one to create diverse desertscapes.
-This is my 'desert brushes' pack. It contains various desert dunes, desert plains, and mesa cliffs. After all, most of us will know how difficult it is getting 'dunes' to appear half way decend in MC!
-Many of these hightmaps are derived from 'real world topographical data'. For example the 'mesa cliffs are from "Canaima National Park" in Brazil. Known for the worlds longest waterfalls and appeared in the movie Avatar. Some of the other brushes come from topography in Saudi Arabia and in the Sahara.
-Did I mention 'sand dunes'? I don't think I did! There are several included in this pack. Yah!
How to use these heightmaps:
There are (2) basic methods for using these heightmaps to creat custom ultra-realistic terrain in your custom maps:
1. You can start a new world in WorldPainter by first 'importing one of these heightmaps' at a scale of your chosing. This might be a good method if you intend for given heightmap to be a main feature of a map. If you intend to expand the map out from this imported heightmap, I recommend next to click 'tools' and "Biomes Viewer". Here, you want to find a seed where there is a large ocean biome around the custom map that you're working with. Don't forget to click "copy seed to world"! And this makes it very easy to 'add tiles' to the map later (Edit > "add/remove tiles"), without having any ugly map edges running into land generated by the game beyond the border. In this way, you are setting things up to have a smooth transitionfrom the custom world to the outer world beyond the edges that players may explore. Remember also that 'tiles' can be added and removed at any time and if you have a very concervative amount of RAM available and still want to creat large maps....you can always build your map in seperate pieces and then 'merge them together at the very end of the process. In my experience, this 'merging' doesn't use as much RAM compared to if I was 'exporting the whole world. And I don't know how big a map I can get away with using this technique but I do know I can create very big maps this way...more than I will ever need!
2. Use these heightmaps to create custom brushes for WorldPainter. This is easy! After downloading the folder containing the grey-scale heightmap image files. ....Drop these into you WorldPainter 'custom brushes folder (%appdata%>Roaming>Worldpainter>custom brushes) ...Then make ridiculously cool and awesome maps to explore! You can even use these brushes in WorldPainter to 'stamp' an extremaly huge land feature on the map. Thousands of blocks wide...yes your computer will slow down to a crawl...but look at the time it will save in the long run! Have fun!
To Download: Diamonds, Favorites, and Comments are of course appreciated! Click the the "world Save" button above and that will take you to the MediaFire download page.
