Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral in Florence Italy (and Assassin's Creed 2). I built it in 1:2 scale on a multiplayer server in October 2010, and ever since I have wanted to do it in 1:1 scale.

New for 1.8: the bundled resource pack is applied automatically when you load the world.  It also includes old style fences in some places (this build was created before fences attached to blocks, and counts on that behavior in some places), tie rods and statues all of which needed mods before.  The textures are an edited version of Steelfeathers' pack. Steelfeathers gets all the credit for the texture pack, and anything that looks bad is probably something I edited.

To play,

  1. put the Duomo folder inside the %appdata%.minecraftsaves folder
  2. If you are using Optifine, Minecraft's auto switching to a resource pack bundled with a world is slightly buggy: the stained glass will not take on the appearance of the custom resource pack.  You'll need to copy the resource pack into your resource pack folder and switch to it manually for everything to look right.

TODO: modern accurate interior is done, maybe a second version more geared towards Assassin's Creed-like parkour puzzling, and with details appropriate to that era / game (the old choir, chandeliers, old facade maybe). Would love to see it if anyone else makes some better parkour goodness out of this.

Update #27 : 11/02/2015 9:23:09 pm11/02/15

the bundled resource pack is applied automatically when you load the world.  It also includes old style fences in some places (this build was created before fences attached to blocks, and counts on that behavior in some places), tie rods and statues all of which needed mods before

Update #26 : 01/06/2013 11:15:04 pm1/06/13

bundled mods to 1.4.6. couple statues rotated

Update #25 : 08/19/2012 8:53:41 pm8/19/12

updated bundled mods to 1.3.2. Good excuse to put a new link up after mediafire deleted my old stuff

Update #24 : 04/11/2012 4:14:34 am4/11/12

updated bundled mods to 1.2.5. Updated bundled texture pack top include some missing icons

Update #23 : 03/05/2012 10:18:40 pm3/05/12

updated bundled mods to 1.2. World also converted (of course) to anvil

Update #22 : 01/23/2012 11:31:47 am1/23/12

edited world to use flatmap terrain generator. No more voidfog (no voidfog mod no longer needed, so it isn't bundled any more). Pretty much done.

Update #21 : 01/16/2012 6:48:08 pm1/16/12

rotated to match new sun direction. Duomo is east, baptistry is west (again, like it should be)

Update #20 : 01/15/2012 3:18:54 pm1/15/12

updated for 1.1. All mods used are now bundled with the worldsave

Update #19 : 12/26/2011 5:30:46 pm12/26/11

Changed outside fences to netherbrick fence (which is skinned to look like stone). This way it matches the marble stuff like it should, and avoids regular fences' retarded new stick-to-everything behavior, which ruined columns in one block wide windows, among other things. Also updated links to mods used for 1.0

Update #18 : 12/14/2011 7:06:36 am12/14/11

Changed world seed so there isn't snow everywhere in 1.0

Update #17 : 12/04/2011 2:21:19 am12/04/11

added link to no voidfog AND no dimming mod for 1.0 final. Explained what will break if someone plays this world in 1.0 before the other mods are updated

Update #16 : 11/19/2011 1:25:17 pm11/19/11

spruced up facade. More red used, which matches the real thing. The facade was finished centuries after the rest, and included a little more red, partly to evoke the flag of the then newly formed nation of Italy. Also, more statues :)

Texture pack edited to incorporate a color shifted version of Steelfeathers' new stone brick texture (the interior parts that aren't light yellow)

schematic now out of date, will fix later

Update #15 : 10/29/2011 1:18:54 pm10/29/11

added schematic for people who like that.

Update #14 : 10/26/2011 2:03:57 pm10/26/11

added in statues using Morgeh's statues mod, and added some missing statue nooks that will show up even for people without the mod. Changed archive from jar to rar (whoops)

Update #13 : 10/24/2011 12:04:40 pm10/24/11

final cleanup for distribution

Update #12 : 10/23/2011 10:05:02 am10/23/11

details (artwork, altar, side chapels, support struts) done

Update #11 : 10/21/2011 7:10:38 pm10/21/11

finished the floor

Update #10 : 10/18/2011 6:41:48 am10/18/11

build the Baptistry of Saint John that sits in front of the Duomo. It was missing in Assasin's Creed 2 because of memory limitations (lol console)

Update #9 : 10/15/2011 12:43:25 am10/15/11

Added Giotto's Campanile (belltower). Exterior only, don't know if I'll do an interior for that

Update #8 : 10/14/2011 10:19:21 pm10/14/11

interior dimensions were off a bit to accommodate the outer dimensions (off by ones everywhere thanks to using 2 meter thick walls so I could have a different material on each side instead of 1 meter thick walls)

Changed it around so the outside is off a bit to accommodate the inside (the errors inside were compounded worse, making the aisles way too wide compared to the nave). So that's fixed.

Also got the interior of the dome done. No good way to replicate the fresco, so just gold for now.

Update #7 : 10/13/2011 10:09:53 pm10/13/11

blocking in the interior under the dome (transept/apses)

Update #6 : 10/12/2011 11:47:00 am10/12/11

finished rough outline of the interior for the nave and aisles

Update #5 : 10/10/2011 5:14:50 pm10/10/11

With the addition of Brunelleschi's dome, the exterior is mostly done, aside from a few small details like which buttresses have roofing tile and which don't, and D'Agnolo's gallery and maybe some other stuff.

Still need to do the interior, the campanile and the baptistry

Update #4 : 10/09/2011 11:12:19 am10/09/11

Completed the drum the dome will sit on. The real one stayed like this for about a century before Brunelleschi figured out how to build a dome that large without any buttresses (when he wasn't busy discovering perspective). He's buried in the crypt under the cathedral, in a position of honor

Update #3 : 10/08/2011 2:33:48 am10/08/11

filling in the back end (apse/transept domes done)

As I understand from the description, it is available for use in a project (if I won't earn money) as long as I give credit; but I would like to ask again if you allow me to do so?

awesome :D now i want to play ac2 again xD
didn't play it for a year or so now, but remembered everything. great job with the sound.
i know you visited florence, but have you ever seen san gimignano? almost every step reminded me to ac2, great how the programmers created it in the game. would also be a huge project for minecraft ;)

I have never been to San Gimignano, but I knew about it before playing AC2 and it was really neat to see in game. It would make a neat Minecraft project. I thought Venice would be neat, but it's really too big for anyone to build (completely at least) but someone could do San Gimignano. Scale is a little more realistic :)

Thanks for checking out the project :)

yeah I've been there. This one is modeled after the real one, not the one in Assassin's Creed (which has a few weird changes, like an entire level missing inside the cupola)

Mediafire removed all my files. Ive reuploaded my mods, havent got around to the builds yet. Working on it, i was actually working on getting the bundled statue mod updated so i could upload this for 1.3.2. Will get to it ASAP, and if the statues take too long ill just upload without them for now

You should build a replica of Florence as shown in Assassins Creed. It would be an awesome free running map for people, and for many other things, too.

yep. you can swap some blocks around in worldedit and get something reasonable. pink wool -> red wool. light green wool -> stone. netherfence -> fence. orange wool -> brown wool. netherrack or brick or whatever is on the floor -> red wool. cobble or whatever else is on the floor -> green wool. It loses some detail, but fits in a lot better with other stuff. I've done it, don't think I have it saved anywhere though

It was all built around a custom texture pack though and I make no apologies for it.
I still love it anyways :)

which is why they are bundled. I think 1.1 gives me a possible fix so I won't need voidfog mod. Fence mod is just :( It wasn't necessary when I started building it (voidfog mod wasn't either). Minecraft just keeps changing out from under me. Statue mod and freerunners mods are the only ones I use by choice, but they aren't super necessary

I do take full responsibility for it needing a texture pack though :) Didn't feel like compromising. It can be made to look acceptable with the default pack, I've messed around with it before.
