That's a pretty old trick and neither did I invent it, I just use it for my vehicle builds because it fits so well. But I'm glad you like it!

For the rear view mirrors I used "polished dark prismarine" which doesn't exist ingame as a block but as a custom head: https://minecraft-heads.com/custom-heads/blocks/22914-polished-dark-prismarine
