Level 46 : Master Mountaineer

Legend speaks of a lone paradise to the east- a sacred land long forgotten by humanity for over a millennium. The serene, spiritual energy is dense in the atmosphere, resulting in many strange but beautiful natural anomalies throughout the island. Bamboo suddenly tower over mountains. Bonsai trees triple in size. Large waterlilies float in the spacious ocean.

The untarnished garden of the east awaits its discovery by the lone wanderer, seeking salvation in solitude.

The full download of the map is available on Mediafire. It's compatible with survival or creative play, but the map is mainly intended for creative. Also, please only load this map on 1.8 or above!

Hello everyone! It's been just over 13 months since my last post, so long time no see.
I began this project in late July 2015. After over half a year of work on this project, with over 100 hours of work dedicated to this map, I hope I've created something you can enjoy!

This is an Oriental (Far East) themed terraform. I took some time to research environments that would be most easily identified with landscapes found in countries such as China, Korea, Japan, and many more. However, I didn't want a completely realistic map (would be a shame not to take advantage of the numerous possibilities Minecraft gives). Thus, I decided to add a flavor of fantasy elements to this landscape too, such as giant bamboo forests or an ocean full of large water lilies. Here's just some examples of real-world inspiration for this map.

  • Rock Forest: Shilin, China
  • Large Bonsai Forests: Bonsai cultivation
  • Bonsai Isles: Halong Bay, Vietnam
  • Mountain Peak: Zhangjiajie/Quartz Sandstone Peak Forest, China
  • Mangroves: Southeast Asia
  • Cherry Blossoms: Japan
  • Rice Terraces: China, Vietnam
  • Bamboo Forest: China

Bamboo Forest

Giant bamboo stalks jut out from the forest floor, and the rest of the landscape is covered by a canopy of large green and crimson trees. However, it is not just the land that is brimming with life - off the coast of the bamboo forest, clumps of bamboo thrive in both shallow and deep waters, accompanied by large waterlilies.
Mountain Peak

The mountain peaks soar beyond the thick clouds, populated by huangshan pines. Several large stone pillars dot the edges of the peak, and a large ridge to the north is the only landform dividing the mountains from the rice terraces. However, the most distinct feature of this area is a lone statue of the Buddha meditating on a mountainside.
Stone Forest

The tall rocks seem to fall to the ground in the manner of stalagmites, with many looking like petrified trees, thus creating the illusion of a forest made of stone. Eternal exposure to the elements have slowly weathered these ridges, and the stone forest is just one of the fantastical anomalies found on this island.
Hot Springs

Terraced springs sit atop a cliff, exuding an atmosphere of tranquility. A large thicket grows alongside the hot springs, and scattered large bonsai trees grow along the edges of the cliff.
Rice Terraces

Between the dense bamboo forest and the lone mountain lies several large rice terraces. Food is abundant, and the surplus shows no sign of vanishing anytime soon.
Volcano

Thick smoke rises from the volcano's crater, and streams of lava flow out from the sides onto the ocean water. Large basalt columns protrude around the volcano, and large stone spires rise up from the adjoining landscape. Although rocky, there is also unique life on the volcano not found anywhere on the island, thanks to the volcanic soil produced by the ashes.
Cherry Blossom Grove

The southernmost hill is home to the cherry blossom trees. The remnants of a stone forest can be found on the hill, and in the shallow surrounding waters, large reeds and lotus flowers take sanctuary.
Willow Swamp

Willow trees grow in this area, accompanied by slowly yellowing pines. Driftwood, teeming with silkworms, float unimpeded. Algae is especially abundant, and aquatic plants grow on floating rocks in the bordering ocean.
Bonsai Isles

There are several small islands beyond the volcano inhabited by large bonsai trees and smaller bamboo. Karsts line the edges of the isles and also feature a sea cave.
Mangroves

Plants with enormously long roots grow in the ocean beside the bonsai isles. Near the coast, their roots protrude from the water like small, sharp rocks. Towards the north of the forest, a lone, ancient mangrove tree grows isolated from the rest of its species.

Statistics & Tools Used
Although this map is actually smaller than my previous few maps, it was by far the most difficult project I have ever undertaken. Many schematics are unique and built from scratch, and I also had to experiment constantly to get the correct look for many of the areas on this map. It wasn't uncommon that I had to test export one area from Worldpainter up to 10 times to see if it looked alright in game.

The map had no in-game editing involved - everything was placed using Worldpainter or MCedit.

It was an extremely tedious process, but I believe that in the end it has resulted in this map being one of my smallest, but most densely detailed projects I've ever posted.

Here's some data I gathered throughout the process of my work on this map.

This map used over 450 different schematics during the Worldpainter process, and uses 122 different Worldpainter layers.

Map Dimensions: Approximated 3000 x 3000 blocks

Project start date: July 23, 2015

100+ hours spent painting, building, and rendering

Tools used: Worldpainter, MCEdit

Was thinking about playing this on survival, but does it have naturally occurring underground ores? Or is it all just stone?

yeah, there are ores. just use the survival map version included in the zip ^^
Amazing! I have a map suggestion. How about one based on Southeast Asia, with natural cities and towering jungles? Also one based on South America would be cool too.

since when were cities natural? xD
I mean as in hollowed out trees & mountains and the like :P

In more detail; it could be a forest or mountain range where the natural structures have a manmade tone to them (aka hollowed out, several floors [they don't have to span the whole interior, just at least a large enough natural shape to hold something], and some openings to let some fresh air in [these can be concealed by climbing plants and crystals]). And since jungles and mountains are staple "biomes" of Southeast Asia, you could pretty much have a whole city that looks like Southeast Asia without the humans (even though there hypothetically could be since, well, it's a city)!
