Hagia Sophia

Hey all, I have yet another build and this time it's the great church of Hagia Sophia. The current structure was built after the 6th Century Nika Riots by Emperor Justinian I of the Eastern Roman Empire. Hagia Sophia's construction was spearheaded by Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles
who finished their work in 537 CE. For a thousand years, it served as the principal church of the city of Constantinople. Later after the Ottoman occupation of the city, the church was converted into a mosque and most of its artwork was covered up.

This particular version is going to be the basis for a series of Hagia Sophia projects. Currently it features the exterior configuration of the late Justinian Era Hagia Sophia without any additional addons. Later down the line, I will use this to build a 13th Century and a 15th Century Hagia Sophia.

Good work! If you're making a 6th century Hagia Sophia post-558, on suggestion would be change your Hagia Eirene next to it, as your current model is more representative of the 8th century reconstruction. Also what I assume to be the small baptistery was probably not a baptistery in the 6th century, but a dining/reception hall

Thank you for the compliment and the corrections! This current build isn't particularly representative of any one time period, it's just a mockup while I build the main bulk of Hagia Sophia. Once I start separating them out into different time periods, I'll make the appropriate changes.

Although, I do have to ask. Where do you get your sources from? I've followed your work for some time now (big fan by the way) and I always wondered where you got the model for your Hagia Irene and other structures around Hagia Sophia.

Thanks! There are quite a few sources, but the main ones I used would be as follows:

Hagia Sophia:
Procopius - On Buildings
Ekphrasis of Paul the Silentiary
Ken Dark and Jan Kostenec - Hagia Sophia in Perspective
Rowland Mainstone - Hagia Sophia
Natalia Teteriatnikov - Justinianic Mosaics in Hagia Sophia
Plans by Robert Van Nice

Hagia Eirene:
Thomas Matthews - Early Churches of Constantinople
Alexander van Millingen - Byzantine Churches of Constantinople
Wolfgang Muller-Wiener - Bildlexicon zur Topographie Istanbuls (plans by Ernest Mamboury)
Slobodan Curcic - Architecture in the Balkans

Also for the hospital of Sampson there is a brilliant book about byzantine hospitals in general by Timothy Miller - The Birth of the Hospital in the Byzantine Empire

Augustaion:

Constantine Porphyrogenitos - De Ceremoniis (this is one of the main works for the topography of the Great Palace in general)
Nicetas Choniates' History
Cyril Mango - Brazen House
Elena Boeck - The Bronze Horseman of Justinian in Constantinople
Luke Lavan - Public Space in the Late Antique City

This is quite the list already, but if you want sources on other/more specific buildings, let me know! Hope this helps
