Legend has it that the magicians of days lost had, at one point, defeated a dragon. But at the behest of the King, they did not kill. Instead, they buried it deep beneath the ocean. Those magicians made a compound, where they could safely keep it hidden and controlled. The heat emanating from the dragon made enough bubbles for it to breathe, but it weakened it to the point of uselessness.
But, due to a hurricane above-ground, the seas were choppy, causing much air to be thrown into the dragon's prison. This reinvigorated the trapped creature, causing a massive vestige of energy to be thrown into his muscles. He ripped apart his cage, and through the gate of his prison.
This find was the harbinger of our destruction. For not long after this, our entire civilization crumbled under its wrath.
