This is my 1:1 scale reconstruction of the Hippodrome of Constantinople as it would of appeared during the reign of emperor Constantine VI 913-919AD. This was the center of Constantinoples social life during the citys glory days and housed many beautiful art works along its center spina such as the tripod of plataea from delphi, Horses from the temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the obelisks of Theodosius and Constantine as well as many other statues taken from all around the empire.
Some History
This hippodrome was originally built in 203 AD during emperor Septimus Severus rebuilding of the town of byzantium. Under emperor Constantine in 324AD the hippodrome was greatly expanded as byzantium was also greatly enlarged and turned into the new imperial capital Constantinople. The hippodrome was host to the nika riots of 532 where the rivalry between chariot racing teams and discontent with emperor Justinians policys exploded into a rebellion that led to portions of constantinople being burned down and justinian ordering the roman army to quell the revolt which led to 30,000 rioters being killed inside the hippodrome. During the 4th crusade the hippodrome was sacked and much of its artwork was stolen or destroyed and the hippodrome fell into ruin after that and after 1453 when Constantinople was taken over by the ottomans there wasnt much left and the hippodrome was gradualy forgotten but never actualy built over
-Special Thanks to hherlev of roma antiquae 320 A.D. for allowing me to use the frame of his circus maximus to make this build possible
The download includes 2 schematics one that is intended for flat ground and one that is ment to be able to be ploped down into hills like the real life version
