Britain, during its long struggle against the Axis Powers, designed and laid down a fleet of thirty-nine Garrison-class "Shallow-Water Patrol Destroyers" to serve as the last defense against enemy naval vessels. One of these vessels was the G-24. G-24 and her captain, Lionel Davila, were sent to the shores of Western Africa with two other G-type patrol destroyers as a small force garrisoned there. For a year, she saw minimal action.

Then, in 1950, G-24 partook in an effort to capture a German destroyer. This maneuver worked brilliantly, and the Royal Navy gained another much-needed vessel. Armed with only four 3.7-inch guns, six Oerlikons, Two Pom-Poms, and a quintuple torpedo launcher, G-24 led a squadron that came to be known as the "Scrap Fleet", comprised of German prize ships and small destroyers such as the G-24. The ship eventually acquired the nickname "Macharius" after the great British general.
