Placeable Bookshelves with No Mods!
For Minecraft Version 1.13
This Datapack Allows you to craft, place, and use interactive bookshelves in Minecraft 1.13! It's
a Datapack, so follow the instructions in "Installation.txt" or "ReadMe.txt"

UPDATE V3.0:

I have updated the pack to V3.0, and is now MUCH more reliable. The pack no longer uses spawn eggs, instead you can place the shelves with trapdoors and they will now have hitboxes, which you can use to break them!

You no longer need to remove shelves with a Shelf Hammer, you need only break the trapdoor secretly hidden inside them.

The New pack uses a New Resource Pack, and if you're seeing weird shelves, run the command: /function bookshelf:convert

I have also added a bookshelf for EVERY Block that has a Slab Variant!

IF THERE IS EVER A BOOKSHELF YOU CANNOT REMOVE FOR SOME REASON, RUN THE COMMAND: /function bookshelf:force_kill
This is a V3.0 feature ONLY.


To Do:

- Utilize the Shelf Hammer from the other pack to allow for the creation of Corner Shelves
- Fix the raycasting on the placement a little bit to be more accurate, so that you don't have the possibility of loosing a shelf
- (Make a Video for V3.0 - This was planned, but due to time constraints I couldn't make it before releasing V3.0)

I installed v3.0. Anytime I destroyed a bookshelf (I can do it only from backside of the shelf) I got a n additional trapdoor. What to do with this?

Oops! I've updated it to 3.0 now.
I installed it correctly but when ever I craft a bookshelf I get 2 knowledge books that disappear. The hammer doesn't craft anything, did I mess something up?

Also why did I get the 2.0 version when I downloaded again?

I'm experiencing some issues.





  1. The bookshelf that I placed is invisible. Idk maybe I installed the textures incorrectly.

    It's a multiplayer server, but I installed the textures for myself, in my personal resource pack folder.



  2. I am trying to remove the invisible bookshelf with the "Bookshelf Hammer" but instead of getting destroyed, the hammer is being placed on the said invisible bookshelf.

    In a rage at it, I tried to hit it to break it in creative mode but that didn't work and even worse, I broke the block beneath it and now I have a permanent missing block.

Every now and then I'll get this "Bookshelf needs to be empty" message which angers me cuz it's only saying that due to the hammer being placed on it as I'm trying to remove the shelf with that hammer.

/kill @e[distance=0..2,type=armor_stand]

Yes, I'm sorry about your frustration, I'm working on a new version now that fixes a lot of these issues! In fact, I'm removing the shelf hammer altogether, and instead I'm going to be given the shelves a hitbox! I'm so sorry that the previous version is a little buggy, but the new version is coming soon and it's FANTASTIC in comparison. I'm even going to include a command that lets you kill nearby bookshelves.

I really think that you have saved the file, but it's not in use.
In the function in bookshelf/functions/no_nbt (old).mcfunction, you are not allowed to use either space and ()

Oh that's right, thanks for looking into that, though I'm not using that file anymore, I'll delete it by the next version, I just wanted to keep it there to remember what the old system was like just in case I needed to go back. I have a whole new crafting system though the recipes stayed the same.

I found another bug in bookshelf\functions\no_nbt\birch.mcfunction. On line 5 you clear minecraft:cod_mob_spawn_egg, and the correct id is minecraft:cod_spawn_egg, without "mob". And on line 4 happens the same.
And same for acacia.

Oh thanks! Though you shouldn't worry about the no_nbt things, cause those are just the old crafting system. Though, did you run into problems in game because of that? :o

Thee resource pack doesn't work, at least, fromm 1.13-pre8, I've been searching around and found that the texture is loaded from blocks, and now, the directory is called block, and same for the diamond hoe, that it's named itemm, not items. And also, the brick one is not called brick anymore, now it's bricks. Changed it in all the model files and got it working perfeectly, the missing one is for the scrolls, that I couldn't find a solution.

Ok, just figured out how to fix the scroll spawn eggs, simply change the items folder name in assets/minecraft/textures in the resourcepack from items to item. :D

Hey I'm on the prerelease 2 version of the snapshot and wanted to give your mod a try... But when I did the crafting recipe with oak planks and slabs, it's creating a villager zombie spawn egg instead. With Spruce it creates a villager spawn egg, etc. I followed your installation instructions, and it could just be that the datapack needs updated due to the new shapshots. Otherwise I look forward to using your datapack on my server as it's foolish to have bookshelves that can't even hold books lol.

Ah yes, seems like I didn't make it clear enough, but thanks so much for your bug report. So!




In 1.13 they still didn't add custom NBT crafting support, which means you can only have base items be the result of the crafting. The only item I thought I could use without breaking it was spawn eggs, so I made it so that in CREATIVE Spawn eggs won't turn into the bookshelves, however, in SURVIVAL they will. This makes it so that in creative you can still use spawn eggs.




This is only TEMPORARY until I update the mod or they add NBT custom crafting support.

Nice! I'm eagerly waiting a lot more datapacks on PMC once 1.13 is out but I'm already using a bunch. Does this make a lot of entites?

Is it confirmed that NBT custom crafting will come out in the next update? If so, they will be able to add all kinds of furniture without replacing blocks

Well! We can already add furniture without replacing blocks, the only difference is that you wouldn't be able to easily craft it. I kind of found a work-around with mine.




But yeah, I'm not replacing ANY blocks or any items.

Not new blocks, but using a resourcepack I'm replacing damage values of a diamond_hoe. WITHOUT actually replacing the base texture or actual damage values of the hoe, since it will only obtain that texture when the item is unbreakable! :D
