In 1922 the first of 52 K class locomotives entered service under Victorian railways. these locomotives served for 57 years. 25 years into the beginning of dieselisation in Victoria with the T class diesel taking over its roles. These locomotives were the last steam engines in service with Victoria railways with half the fleet being put on displays right around Victoria. K 183 was on static display in yarragon until 1992 when it was swapped with K 162 because it was in better condition than it. K 183 was in service for 10 years before tragedy struck when the locomotive collided with a semi trailer, killing 3 people on the footplate of the locomotive when it rolled after it came off of the tracks. to today this locomotive is stored out the back areas of Newport workshops west block. from the crash it was found out to be the driver of the semi trucks fault and steamrail are still receiving insurance money for the eventual restoration and repair of K 183
