Mapuche Small Ruka (House)

Welcome back everyone! I'm here once again to share this build I've made yesterday.

Today I bring you this little Ruka, a traditional house built by the Mapuche people, a civilization of sendentary farmers/hunters located between Argentina and Chile. They are, until this day, a culture that keeps their ancestral traditions alive, including the construction process of the ruka.

This building is composed of a main structure of sticks and logs covered with vegetal material found near the building site. These usually posses a rectangular, ovoidal or circular shape, always with a door looking at the east (there were sometimes a second door looking at the west). In the center of the structure there's the kütralwe, a sacred fireplace where all the activities are made around, and one or two ventilation holes in the top for the smoke to evacuate.

Inside the house there were beds near the walls, pots and baskets with food and water, tools, furniture like chairs and small tables, rugs and lots of cloth. Divisions inside the house were rare, and those who had ones were portable wood panels to separate bedrooms.

When someone wanted to build a ruka, they had to ask to their chief and to the Ngen-Mapu (the spirit of the land and the crops). After the land was selected and delimited, the owner needed to adquire the materials while the rest of the comunity helped with the construction. Once finished, they celebrated with food and dance.
