Built as a replacement to the previous Eastwind-class anti-air destroyers, the Midway-class was built around requirements set after the Battle of Loaf Island (one of these requirements being stealthy against radar). 32 of these ships were constructed and commissioned; 8 of the initial Flight I, 2 in an upgraded Flight IE variant and the remaining 22 as Flight II vessels (later upgraded to Flight IIE standard). All 32 ships were commissioned between 2009 and 2014.

Since their service, three have been sunk in combat.
-NDF-NS Midway (DDG-1301) was struck by mines in April 19th 2011 and sank in deep waters. 120 killed.
-NDF-NS Rainway Strait (DDG-1322) was sunk by Type 022-class submarine T-144 in December 2nd, 2015. 42 killed.
-NDF-NS Bennett F. River (DDG-1330) ran aground east of Theeds in March 26th 2017, no attempt has been made to raise her. 4 killed.

The vessel portrayed in the photos is NDF-NS Leyte Gulf (DDG-1309), a Flight IE variant.
