The Mil Mi-8 is a twin-engined medium-large transport helicopter capable of gunship duties manufactured by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant since the 1960s. The first prototype, the W-8, with a single AI-24W engine, made its maiden flight on 9 July 1961. A second prototype, with two AI-24W engines, made its maiden flight on 17 September 1962. After minor changes, it was introduced into the Soviet Air Force inventory in 1967 as the Mi-8.
The Mil Mi-8 AMTSh-VN is a variant with a door on the right side of the aircraft, and Kevlar protection around the cabin and engines. Some of them have a loading ramp instead of the clamshell doors, allowing them to load a vehicle the size of an SUV inside.
