My cactus farm on our private survival server.
This design is to reduce lag when it's not used.
This is accomplished by using pistons.

* The pistons are on top between the cacti powered by the redstone that runs over the cobbel blocks. And some repeaters to extend the signal
* The items are moved with water streams. There are 2 water source blocks in the 2 corners. This design is much used since it's the best design to get most of the drops.
* The cacti will grow 3 high so be sure to place the pistons high enough. So the cacti grow there entire length when the pistons are not active.
* The switch activates the pistons and the cacti will start dropping items.
This way you can switch the farm off and thus avoiding the cpu usage/lag that the farm generates.
* Another advantage of the pistons is that it will generate a startup boost in item drops therefore its easy to get a fair amount of items in a short time.
* After the first loot, the items will continue to be collected. each cactus will drop one item about each +/-7min on average.
* To save cpu and lag when you make a big farm don't forget to turn the farm off when ure done. :)
