Hello,
the Palazzo di Giustizia is another seat of the Repubblica's civic power I'd like to present. It's occupied by the Gonfaloniere di Giustizia, the supreme judge and the head of all the juridical authorities. Even though his prerogatives are enormous, rarely does he use them, as by the common agreement between the Doge and Signoria, most of the Gonfaloniers have been elderly (and mostly incapable) men, and this office in mostly treated as an onorable closure of the political career.
The complex consists of three buldings: the main chancellery (which contains also the archives and a displayed map) with a massive brick civic tower, the chancellery of the civil servants and lawyers (who, in fact execute most of the Gonfaloniere's prerogatives). The third building, architecturally different from the others, is separeted from the offices and serves as the seat of the merchant guild (selling mostly wine and marble).
The main office has been inspired by Basilica Palladiana at Vicenza and is probably the one most advanced architecturally in the whole Republic. The whole complex is located next to the cathedral, on Piazza Michelangelo, with a distinctive fountain decorated with skulls.
