Halloween marks the beginning of the observance of Allhallowtide, the time of the liturgical year dedicated to the memory of the dead, saints, martyrs, and the faithful departed.
The celebration is first recorded in the early Middle Ages in historically Catholic Nordic countries such as Ireland and England, and over time the rites and customs associated with it have evolved; the holiday is considered one of the most solemn celebrations of the Church. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating.
