This is my 1:1 Scale speculative reconstruction of the Rotunda of Thessaloniki/Galerius as it may have appeared after its conversion into a church around 400ad I chose to build it at its later date due to the surviving interior mosaics and i was in the mood for a byzantine church. the exterior of the building was based on the reconstruction by the galerius palace group and the interior was based on surviving mosaics, the byzantine legacy description and the palatine chapel mosaics to fill in what wasn't described

Some history

The rotunda of thessaloniki was originally constructed in 300a.d. by galerius as part of his capitals imperial palace during the tetriarchy period of the roman empire, its purpose then is currently not known.The date the rotunda was converted into a church is not known but it is thought most likely during the the reign of theodocius 379-395 a.d. during its conversion the aspe was added along with a circular ambulatory around the rotunda that almost doubled the area of the church.The rotundas original oculus was covered over with some of the finest byzantine mosaics known of which portions still survive today. the rotunda served as a church until its conversion into a mosque in 1590 in the centuries to follow it was heavily damaged in earthquakes and repaired several times and still is standing today as a museum.
