It's also not the rocket the US sent to space for the first time; that would be a Jupiter C rocket carrying Explorer 1 in 1958. The first manned mission by the USA was Freedom 7 carrying Alan Shepard on a Mercury-Redstone rocket, in 1961.
The Saturn V was designed and built to carry American astronauts to the Moon, through the Apollo Program.
The first Saturn V launch was Apollo 4, on November 9th 1967, an uncrewed test flight of the entire rocket. It's first Crewed flight was Apollo 8, which took astronauts into orbit around the Moon. Apollo 9 was an orbit of Earth with the Lunar Module attached. Apollo 10 was the second orbital flight around the Moon.
It's most significant role was the launch of 6 crewed landings on the Moon, in the Apollo missions 11-17.
Apollo 13 did not land on the moon due to severe damage in the service module during the flight.
The final Saturn V rocket launched Skylab, the first and only space station operated exclusively by the USA.
