The lever is next to the stairs, because with this room I just tried out the new pistons :) But if I have to hide, I make the redstone circuit 2 blocks under the ground, add the lever next to it, then place dirt or anything 1 block above it, so it will not destroy the circuit, but will be hidden. I hope this helps :) Oh and mark it somehow, so you won't forget where it is :)
I just spent like half an hour hiding my intricate lever and redstone inside of a false tree i made. There's an opening in the leaves where you can barely see the lever and you hit it. :D
And for the marking thing, a rose in the desert, stick, or a torch can easily be looked over by other players.
The marking: For example: I have a secret house in a cave. I made the circuit in the wall, and I put a block of dirt in front of the lever. So it looks natural in a cave, because everyone knows that there can be easily dirt in a cave :D So make it look natural! In the desert, use sandstone! It's a bit lighter than simple sand, but looks natural! :)
