The SS Michelangelo was a italian ocean liner built in 1965 in Genoa for the Italian Line, primarily for service in the North Atlantic. After several delays, the ship finally had her sea trials, wich resulted in the detection of vibrations in her stern area. After the problems were fixed, she began her transatlantic career. In 1966, the ship was struck by a rogue wave while crossing the Atlantic, this resulted in the death of 2 passengers and 1 crew member, with other 50 people injured. The ship's forward superstructure was also badly damaged. In the early 1970s, due to the rapid grow of air travel and the decline of transatlantic trade, the ship became largely unprofitable. It was sold in 1976 to the iranian navy serving as floating barracks for the next 15 years. There were plans to convert the ship to a luxury cruise in 1978 and later in 1983, but the ship's bad condition made this not a viable option. The ship was finally scrapped in Pakistan in 1991.
