History
The SS Mittelfranken was a German passenger ship put into service in 1871, which sailed from Hamburg to New York. It was owned by the Carujanische Schifffahrtsgesellschaft, a young, ambitious shipping company from Hamburg. In 1880, however, it was already too out of date and was sold to a freight shipping company, which converted the Mittelfranken into a freighter. In 1885 she disappeared without a trace while crossing the Atlantic and was never found.
