The SS Raina Knyaginya is named after Raina Popgeorgieva, a teacher from the Bulgarian town of Panagyurishte who is famous for sewing the flag of the (ill-fated) April uprising of 1876.
The ship was built in 1916 during World War I, supposedly as a fast transport craft, but used as a passenger liner after the end of the War, starting in 1923 after massive refurbishments. It was an extremely fast ship for its time, capable of traversing the ocean for 4 days at top speed and was very innovative, implementing features such as the first external pool ever made on board a ship and almost complete isolation of engine components, therefore producing almost no vibrations.
