On the 30th of October 2016 Steamrail Victoria ran a parallel run to Geelong running via the regional rail link. The tour was organised to celebrate 50 years since the formation of the group and 50 years of preservation of steam locomotives in Victoria. The tour operated with D3 639(658) and R761 running a train each from Melbourne in a race to see who could make it to Geelong first. to keep the excitement of on lookers and passengers the locos were kept very close to one another to give the riders a thrill in the effort along the way. Although the D3 had some mid race mechanical problems it was able to reach Geelong first beating its 65 year old rival. The D3 class 4-6-0 was made between 1902 and 1914 and were made at numerous workshops around Victoria. The R class 4-6-4 Hudson was made following WWII and entered service during the introduction of diesels on Victoria's mainline. Today i have built both consists of the tour side by side, who do you think would win if they were to race again?
