Level 4 : Apprentice Engineer
12th of April 1982, 10 years of research and hard work by the NASA comes down to this, the first launch of the Space Shuttle, After a scrubbed launch two days prior due to a failure in the General Purpose Computer, Columbia, like a sleeping white dragon, With Commander John W Young & Pilot Robert L Crippen on-board, are finally sitting on Launch-Pad-39A, the same pad that Apollo 11 blasted off on its way to land the first men on the moon. Watched by millions around the world, and hundreds at the Kennedy Space Center, the countdown to launch begins,

"T-9 Minutes and Counting.
T-3 Minutes All systems Go For Launch"
Columbia switches from using ground power to her own internal power...
"T-20 Seconds and Counting...
4...We've gone for main engine start, we have main engine start...
Booster Ignition, We have liftoff of America's first Space Shuttle! The Shuttle has Cleared the tower!"

Columbia lifts off the pad with a thunderous roar that shakes the air like the whole world exploding, engines throttling up to full power after smashing through the sound barrier on a pillar of cloud... Two Minutes and Eleven Seconds into flight the two solid rocket boosters having burned all of their solid rocket fuel separate from the external tank, falling back to the earth to splash down in the ocean and be reused... Eight Minutes and Fifty Four seconds into flight, the massive white external tank separates from the orbiter, on a path to burn up in reentry crashing down in the Indian ocean.. All that's needed now is for Columbia to do a set of small burns with its twin Orbital Maneuvering System engines to get into a nice stable orbit.

For STS-1 and STS-2 the External Tank was only painted white for fears that UV Light could damage the fuel tank, however it didn't, on STS-3 it was left orange, saving 272kg

The launch happened to fall on the 20th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first flight into space on Vostok 1, this however was a complete coincidence, and wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the Computer error postponing the launch.

On April 14th, over the Indian Ocean, the two OMS engines fired again, to bring Columbia down on a trajectory to land in Edwards Air Force Base, California... Columbia nosed up to 40° for Re-Entry, Columbia then started performing a series of Roll Reversals to slow down faster, and change her trajectory to line up closer with Edwards, Approaching subsonic speeds, Commander John W Young took control of Columbia to manually land her, two T-38 Talon training jets soon joined up with Columbia to fly in formation with her down to landing, making sure all is fine...

"Gear Down
1.. Touchdown...
Nose gear's 10 Feet...
3... Touchdown!
Welcome Home Skipper!"

"Welcome Home Columbia! Beautiful, Beautiful!"

Columbia has landed at Edwards Air Force Base, 36 Orbits, 2 days, 6 hours, 20 minutes and 53 seconds since liftoff, and

This build was posted on the 35th Anniversary of Columbia returning to earth, paving the way for the space shuttle, and spaceflight.

The build is meant to be a small scale Columbia and Shuttle Stack, both with their respective stands. It was made with Heliks's Texture pack, and took a few days to make.

(And yes, i did get some lines in this from the song about STS-1: Rush - Countdown, it's rather good, you should go listen to it)
