My take on this iconic Mesoamerican Pyramid. It is on a 1:1 scale.

One of the largest pyramids in the Americas is the Pyramid of the Sun, located in the Central-Mexican metropolis Teotihuacan. Having a base of approximately 225 metres and a height of around 65 metres, archaeologists estimated that some 1 million cubic metres of volcanic stone was needed to build this massive structure.

Teotihuacan was founded somewhere around 100 BC, possibly by remnants of a local people that fled their homeland because of a volcanic eruption. In a matter of decades, Teotihuacan grew out as a major metropolis in the Central-Mexican highlands, covering some 20 square kilometres and housing up to 150.000 people. During its heyday between the 5th and 7th centuries, it was the largest Mesoamerican city. The origins of its people are still under strong debate, but several contestants are the Totonacs and the Otomis. What is certain is that Teotihuacan was a multi-ethnic metropolis, as several barrios have been found that housed Zapotecs, Mixtecs, and Mayas.

Teotihuacan became the most influencing metropolis in Mesoamerica, with trade routes and ties to foreign areas and cultures. Several Teotihuacano elements can be found in Oaxaca, the Gulf Coast and the Maya area, with perhaps the Talud-Tablero architecture style being the most prominent. This flow influence was not one-directional however, as influences from those foreign areas can also be found at Teotihuacan. Jade artifacts and ceramics coming from the Maya area have been found in Teotihuacan tombs. Several of the famous murals at Teotihuacan in the Tetitla barrio, known as the Realistic Paintings, show scenes of people fishing for molluscs, a scene unknown to the more arid region of Teotihucan. Furthermore, characters in Maya fashion, Maya mythological scenes and Maya hieroglyphs can be found there as well.

Nearing the end of the 6th century, there is archaeological evidence that several of the major pyramids and palace complexes were burned and subsequently abandoned. Given that these fires did not occur in the residential areas, it has been hypothesised that the rulership of Teotihuacan fell due to an internal uprising by its inhabitants. Nevertheless, the evidence thus far uncovered sheds perhaps more questions than answers.

NB: As with al my projects, a 100% perfect reconstruction is
impossible. I kept to the original dimensions as best as possible, but
the colours, although accurate in the sense that many Mesoamerican buildings
were painted in bright colours, mostly red, are my speculation and
artistic freedom.
