This will soon be a server, I am only releasing it now as a preview, stay tuned!
Welcome to the City College of New York 1952 Server!
This is a world and server dedicated to the rich legacy of the City College of New York (CCNY). Whether you're a prospective student, current student, graduate, or just a visitor, all are welcome! Explore, build your own island (around the campus), or help with building the present-day campus and the surrounding tenements. There's always something to do on this server. Explore, build, PvP, we're open to anything! If you live near the campus or would like to, you're welcome to move into one of the surrounding tenements. Just be respectful and no griefing. :-)
The History
The City College of New York (CCNY) is the flagship of the City University of New York, the largest University system in the United States. City College is the oldest provider of free public higher education in America, starting with its original location downtown at 23rd St & Lexington Avenue in a building called the Free Academy. The College moved uptown to its present site in 1907 and later annexed neighboring institutions, including the Hebrew Orphan Asylum (1942), the Episcopal Protestant Orphan Asylum (1947) and the Convent of the Sacred Heart (1952), as enrollment grew and its curriculum expanded.
The college today is located between 130th to 141st Street, between Amsterdam Avenue and St. Nicholas Terrace in Hamilton Heights. Its iconic Neo-Gothic campus, built from 1903-1907 by architect George B. Post are NYC landmarks and are often open for visitors during Open House New York.
Being a graduate of CCNY, I decided to build the campus as it appeared at the 'peak of the empire' when it included 45 buildings and about 40 acres during the years 1952-1954. By 1955, thirty of the campus buildings were demolished and five were sold or given away to other institutions. Today the campus is made up of 18 buildings and 36 acres. Many of them are modern buildings built as replacements for the older buildings that were lost. I have completed the 1952 campus, with only some landscaping and surrounding tenements left to build. The present-day campus has not yet been built, I leave that to you! I will often be around to help and offer guidance when it comes to the campus buildings.
When you enter the server, you spawn on a giant medallion of the college seal. If you walk Northwest, you are seeing the campus in 1952-1954. If you walk Southeast, you are seeing the campus as it appears present-day. It's time travel in Minecraft! Signs indicating the name and year of construction and demolition for each building are next to the entrances of each building.
What Started This Initiative?
With the onset of COVID shutting down schools and colleges, many students began building their campuses in Minecraft to create virtual spaces for collaboration, socializing, and learning. Some notable Minecraft campuses include Columbia, MIT, Berkeley, UCLA and others. Now CCNY joins this movement and takes it a step further, showing the history of the campus in a fully-immersive environment. I am fortunate to have worked at the CCNY Archives and had access to many photos of the old campus and blueprints. I hope this will serve as a starting point and others will join in to finish the campus and build their own worlds.

Actually, I thought of something. Have you ever considered building Hatfield House in Minecraft? It's a large country house in England, and while I've seen several builds of it on here, they all mimic the house when it was used for Croft Manor in the Tomb Raider films and games, which isn't the actual design of the house. Just a thought.
Let me know if you'd like to collaborate on it or any other build! Its always fun to work in a team. 😄
