Somewhere in the Misty Isles, between fire and smoke, lies the ancient capital of the vampire race, Ziris. A thousand years ago, when the two portals leading into Karuta opened, one opened near this city of darkness. It is unknown who built this city or who inhabited it, but it is certain that it is thousands of years old. No one knows for sure why the vampires claimed this city for themselves, but scholars speak of a great power buried inside of the volcanic mountains that attracted the vampires.

The vampires believe that they are descendant from Kumh (literally god in the ancient language of the vampires) himself. The story goes that one night, Kumh wished to share his gift of immortality with the universe, so he gave the gift of vampirism to a man named, Akhal. Kumh spoke to Akhal, and told him to share his gift with those who would be worthy of it. Not only had Akhal received immortality, he had also been granted godlike powers. He had dominion over the night and all its creatures, the strength of a hundred men, the speed of a falling star, and he could even heal grievous wounds. But it came at a price, only blood could pay for his immortality and great power.

Akhal, The First Vampire

Akhal, The First Vampire

Akhal travelled to many different worlds, searching for those who would be worthy of vampirism. Eventually he sired three vampires. These vampires however, weren't as powerful as Akhal himself. When a vampire embraces, his childe rises from death one Generation higher than him — one more Generation removed from Akhal, and one more Generation removed from the Divine power. The three vampires created by Akhal sired 14 vampires in total, the Third Generation, their progeny became the Fourth Generation, their childer became the Fifth Generation, and so on and so forth up through the distant Thirteenth Generation prevalent in these nights.

All vampires trace their ancestry according to how far removed they are from Akhal. He is considered the First Generation of vampires, the most powerful of them all and Vampires use Generation to describe their heritage as Akhal's children. Those of low generation, two or three times removed from Akhal, are accorded more respect than those nine or ten times removed. Vampires that are from the Eight generation and above are referred to as 'Vampyr' and those that are from the lower generations are referred to as 'Vampire'.

One vampire from the Third Generation, named Azrael, traveled to the world of Karuta to establish his own kingdom there. However he soon realized that his bite simply killed the native races instead of turning them into vampires. The immunity of the orcs and elves to the vampiric condition made Azrael turn to another world to build his army. He traveled to a distant world named Aoria, where he deceived the race of men to follow him into Karuta. Azrael and his new army reclaimed the ancient city of Ziris, and established a prosperous vampire society.

Azrael

Azrael

No one has seen or heard from Azrael for over 700 years. Those of the fourth generation took power once they realised Azrael was gone. Ever since the vampires have been fighting a bloody war with their own kind, to see who should rule their race and lead them in the fight against The Golden Alliance. First the fourth generation, the ones sired by Azrael himself, took power. But they were betrayed by the fifth generation, and so on. These days a powerful, vampiric sorceror sits on the throne of Ziris. His name is Rhaziel. He belongs to the Sixth generation, and rules Ziris until his sire, the king of Ziris, wakes up from his century long slumber.

Now that the vampires no longer had a vampire with the power of a lesser god on their side, they were struggling to hold back the combined armies of the humans and elves. This is why a 180 years ago the vampires entered an alliance with the orcs. This alliance was named The Alliance of the Two Towers.

Religion:

The human slaves believe the vampires are gods. The vampires forbid any other kind of religion in Ziris. Gods are immortal, and so are the vampires, therefore they must be gods. Almost all vampires have forgotten the stories about Akhal, and those who do remember believe them to be fairy tales. Those that are caught praying to any gods but the vampiric overlords are brutally punished. Most of the human population believes the vampires are gods as well, and they pray and give offerings to their vampiric rulers in their tiny temples in their slums. To defy a vampire would be to defy a god, so those slaves that are wise, simply obey.

Government:

The government of Ziris is most likely the least democratic of all the nations in Karuta. Most often, the vampires that are the oldest are at the top and hold complete power. They are part of the ruling council, although most often this position is a symbolical one, since the oldest vampire has the final say in important matters. The younger vampires fulfill important positions such as overseers, captains, architects and are sometimes even allowed on the council.

Ziris is the only city in Karuta that has two different races living inside its walls. The humans, often referred to as 'slaves' by the Vampiric nobility make up a very large portion of the population. Humans are generally seen as servants and food by the vampires, for they are mortal, and it is their blood that feeds them. However, once a human has been chosen as a personal servant by a vampire, the vampire will protect that humans life with great ferocity, for that human will now be their property. It is forbidden by law in Ziris for a vampire to hurt or kill the human servant of another vampire.

Some human slaves live better lives than the lower classes in the Kingdom of Varith, or Waruk. If the slaves are obedient to their masters, they are often rewarded with positions such as a captain in the army, an honor guard, a scholar, or even an apprentice at the Mages Guild of The Dominion. As long as they are loyal to their masters, they will be rewarded. When a human proves extremely valuable to a vampire, the vampire may ask the council for permission to turn that human into a vampire, and thus bestowing upon his human the ultimate gift.
