In ages past, this river snaked its way through the valley of Simarel. Inhabited by a race of Elves, these scintillating mountains were home to a multitude of life, equal to none in diversity.
It endured several eons, and all was well. But nothing lasts forever, and the world changed. Soon this land became colder, so cold that few things could survive for long.
Carving statues of ice from the life that once resided here, the frost took over the entire valley, halting the river in its tracks.
The land remained in its frozen state for several thousand years, only the hardiest of lifeforms surviving.
Then something changed. The world became warmer again, and thaw set in for the Valley of Simarel. Snow melting from the mountains, leaving only traces of the hardest ice, and that meltwater pouring onto the crystalline surface of the river, returning it to water once again.
So here it is. My masterpiece (for now anyway).
I discovered this coloring technique somewhat on accident. I was just messing around with worldpainter masks for a commission, exported the map, and made a render to take a look at it.
it looked absolutely gorgeous (the third last picture of this project is what I saw then).
I used that old version for the client, at least in part, so I had to make a new version to put up for download.
