A Soviet and Russian corporation engaged in the development and production of military equipment, road construction vehicles, railway wagons. The corporation includes research institutes, design bureaus and manufacturing enterprises. The main enterprise is the Uralvagonzavod plant, located in Nizhny Tagil, Sverdlovsk region.

During the first five-year plans, large-scale construction projects were underway throughout the Soviet Union. The growth of industry and the vast expanses of the state required a large number of railway cars. In this regard, in the spring of 1931, it was decided to build a carriage factory near the city of Nizhny Tagil. UVZ's birthday is October 11, 1936. On this day, the plant produced the first heavy-duty wagon. In the pre-war years, the company produced more than 35 thousand wagons.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, UVZ was reoriented to the production of tanks. By the end of 1941, 12 enterprises from different cities were evacuated to Nizhny Tagil. They merge with the UVZ into the Ural Tank Factory No. 183 named after the Comintern. In two months, all UVZ capacities are being rebuilt for the production of T-34 tanks.

The plant received more than 3,500 units of evacuated equipment and 70 thousand new employees. On December 18, 1941, the first T-34-76 tank was assembled, and in December the first 25 combat vehicles were sent to the front. The plant became the main supplier of the T-34 for the Soviet army. In memory of the labor exploits of Tagil residents, a monument to this tank was erected at the entrance of the UVZ.

In the post-war period, the plant continued to fulfill military orders, and also began to produce wagons and agricultural, construction and aerospace products again. In the 50-60 years, the T-54, T-55, T-62 tanks and their various modifications were created at the plant.

On September 12, 1963, the plant was renamed, again becoming the "Ural Railway Car Building Plant named after F.E.Dzerzhinsky".

In 1974, Uralvagonzavod developed and began to produce a third-generation T-72 tank - one of the best and most massive tanks of the second half of the 20th century. It was put into service in dozens of countries around the world.

In the difficult 1990s, UVZ, as a result of the irresponsible policy
of the "reformers", lost most of the defense state order, but at the cost of enormous efforts, it was able to survive and preserve the team. The plant has successfully expanded conversion production. Many years of experience allowed us to master the production of new civil equipment - tractors, excavators, loaders in a short time.
