The old portland class I made was fairly inaccurate, and anyways I personally thought it looked ugly, so I rebuilt it keel-up
and I am quite pleased with how it turned out. No interior

Portland built as was in 1942, midway
Indianapolis built as was in 1945, when she was sunk
USS Portland (CA-33) - was the lead ship of her class launched 1932. In the battle of the coral sea, she escorted Yorktown (CV-5) and picked up survivors from Lexington (CV-2). She escorted yorktown in the battle of midway, and then picked up her survivors as well. She participated in the Guadalcanal campaign and the battle of leyte gulf later in the war.
She was decommissioned in July 1946, and scrapped in Panama City FL in 1962.

USS Indianapolis (CA-35) - She was commissioned 1932, and was admiral spruances flagship throughout the war. She participated in the New Guinea campaign, Aleutian Islands campaign, and several others.
In July, 1945, she delivered approximately 1/2 the worlds supply of enriched uranium to a US airbase in Tinian, for the 'Little Boy' bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
She then proceeded to Guam, and then left Guam July 28, and on July 30, the IJN's submarine I-58 torpedoed her.

880 survived the original sinking, only 317 made it home alive, because of the largest mass-shark attack in history. (Inspired the movie, "Jaws")
The Navy had not known of the sinking until 3 days later, when a seaplane spotted survivors floating adrift.

The events of her sinking are controversial.

In November 1945, Captain Charles McVay was court martialed. He was convicted of hazarding the ship by failing to zigzag.
They US Navy found the star witness to be Mochitsura Hashimoto, the captain of I-58 when it sunk Indianapolis. He stated that it would not have matter had they zigzagged, although it is unknown how accurate the statement is as the translators were bias to the Navy's point of view.

Regardless, after the trial, Admiral Chester Nimitz remitted McVays sentence. In the 1960s, due to guilt from the incident, McVay committed suicide.

In 2001, the US congress had McVay's record cleared of any wrongdoing.

Indianapolis is one of the few famous wrecks that have never been found, although many attempts have been made.
