USS North Carolina (BB-55) was the lead ship of her class and the first new U.S. battleship built in nearly two decades. Commissioned in 1941, she was 222 meters (729 feet) long with a full-load displacement of about 44,800 tons. Powered by steam turbines, she could reach a top speed of 28 knots (52 km/h or 32 mph).
Her main battery included nine 406 mm (16-inch) guns in three triple turrets, backed by twenty 5-inch dual-purpose guns and dozens of AA weapons. She had good protection for her class, with up to 305 mm of belt armor and 406 mm on turret faces.
North Carolina served mainly in the Pacific, earning 15 battle stars — more than any other U.S. battleship. She supported operations from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, surviving torpedo and air attacks along the way. Today, she's preserved as a museum ship in Wilmington, North Carolina.
