The USS Wasp was an aircraft carrier laid down in 1936.
Wasp was designed to fill the remaining 15,000 tons left for the us navy in the washington naval treaty, and was a sort of smaller version of the Yorktown class.
Wasp was the smallest fleet carrier ever built by the US Navy. She was also given significantly less armor and protection than a typical carrier, and her designers believed she would be "doomed to a watery grave."
Not all of the changes in wasp were harmful, however, as it had the first deck-edge elevator of any carrier in the world.
Wasp commissioned in 1940. When hostilities broke out in december 1941 she was placed with Ranger in the atlantic fleet, because it was believed that Germany was less of a naval threat than Japan. In 1941, she supported the occupation of iceland.
In 1942 she twice ferried british fighter aircraft to malta, before being transferred in June to the pacific fleet to make up for losses at Midway (Yorktown) and the Coral Sea (Lexington).
After supporting the Guadalcanal invasions in 1942, Wasp was sunk by Japanese submarine I-19.
Wasp was in commission for less than 2 years, making her the second shortest lived US fleet carrier (after hornet).
Wasp perhaps serves as the truest example of how quality outweighs quantity.
The build is only partial interior, I just have too many other projects to make it full right now
