Valyria used to be a great kingdom of men in the southern areas of Essos. For thousands of years the Valyrians were best at everything in the world, until a cathaclysm named "The Doom" destroyed Valyria. No one knows exactly what happened, but it left Valyria in ruin and killed every Valyrian and every dragon (except the Targaeryens who flet to Dragonstone).

In the books, the sky above Valyria is dark red from the smoke and ashes of the Doom, and it is said that the doom still rules Valyria. In the series this is where the Stonemen, people infected with Greyscale (a highly contagious disease that slowly turns one mad until it kills them and covers their skin with stone-like grey scales), are sent here in order to prevent the disease from spreading. In the books it is more of a green mossy ruined temple ground, which is where we based it on.

Jorah and Tyrion sail through Valyria in order to prevent being caught by pirates, but they are attacked by Stonemen under the bridge of dreams. After fighting them off for a while Tyrion falls into the water and gets saved by Jorah, but Jorah gets infected in the process of saving Tyrion.
