This is my entry for the Skyscraper Solo Project Contest
625 VIA West 57th is one of the newest residential skyscrapers to be added to the Manhattan skyline. It began construction in 2013 and finished in 2016, and was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), an architecture firm based in Denmark. The building was designed as a hybrid between European perimeter block style buildings and Manhattan high-rises, combining the advantages of both building types: the compactness and efficiency of a courtyard building with the airiness and the expansive views of a skyscraper. By keeping three of the corners of the block low and lifting the fourth up to 450 ft, the courtyard opens views to the Hudson river, bringing the sun deep into the block and preserving views of surrounding towers.
My design focused on creating an accurate structure for the complex shape of the building and creating an accurate layout within the shape. Each floor has rooms laid out and each unit is furnished. The courtyard itself has a more robust structure to support the weight of the soil that would be used in the space. This design proved to be quite challenging, given the scale of the building. I created the structure as a framework, and created a digital model within sketchup to help initially understand the proportions.
Give a diamond if you like it, let me know your thoughts in comments below. Best of luck to all the contestants.
