- Backstory -
Benedict waso ¦ in a word, different.
He hadno t asked to be raised. Put it like that he hadno t really asked to be anything.
Life had dealt Benedict a rough hand; un-life had been equally stingy on the dealing.
He had never had the best luck. Back when he was alive he worked as a merchant, always managing to find something to sell 2 months after it had gone out of fashion and people were sick to death of seeing it. His other business ventures were equally unsuccessful. His weapons were oko ¦ as long as the only thing you wanted were blunt, knobbly lumps of metal on a stick. He had a roaring trade in muffins and sponge cakes for a while, until he discovered they were being used as a replacement for rocks at the local stoning. His lack of attention to current affairs also led to him being the only casualty of the Great Pig Stampede of o 31.
He also made a rather pathetic undead. When the necromantic legions of the Dark Lord rode through he was raised up and made to march. He tripped up most of the time on the bulky armour they made him wear, he spent more time being trampled than trampling o he didno t even manage to get re-killed. Once the legions had dissipated he didno t have much to do.
He couldno t hang out with humans for obvious reasons and he was always so awkward around other undead. Once they learnt of the manner of his death and his extremely pacifistic nature he was teased and ridiculed.
He ran away, seeking to escape, trying to end it all. He eventually found a wandering cleric strong enough to destroy him, permanently. Unfortunately a large group of undead had also found the cleric. While concentrating to cast the spell needed to eradicate Benedict he was mobbed and killed. When the undead realised what Benedict was trying to do they moved up to attack him too. In defence, he grabbed up the clerico s sceptre and held it out to keep them back.
There was a blinding flash of light and suddenly he was alone. He donned the robe, picked the sceptre back up and strode off as the ash blew away into the windo ¦
Always wanted to make a skeleton skin, so saw the contest this morning and it was a perfect opportunity. Don't ask where the idea of an undead cleric came from (I try not to question the internal workings of my mind).
Halfway through writing the backstory I also thought "wouldn't he be destroyed if he tried to smite undead?". Now going the cliched 'magic', 'a wizard did it' or 'he's special' route is boring so to solve this I borrowed an idea from Pratchett's Discworld. His amulet is a revival charm. So, upon being self-smote he will become ash and his robe, sceptre and amulet will fall to the ground. The amulet will break, reviving him.
