The ear piercing whale of the air raid sirens shattered the tranquility of the afternoon, and the ominous shadows of the bomber planes blocked out the sun like a foreboding cloud casting the world in an unnatural twilight. Clara’s heart clenched in her chest; she knew all too well what was coming. The Leine army was attacking again. In the distance, black smoke billowed into the sky. Panic clawed at her, but there was no time to dwell on the fear. She had to move. Her breath came in short, frantic bursts as she raced across the small clearing, her footsteps pounding against the dirt as the sound of destruction grew louder and louder. Reaching the old well, she grabbed at the stone slab that had once been a sturdy cover, now just a weathered makeshift lid. The stone groaned as she forced it aside, her fingers trembling. Without hesitating, Clara swung her legs over the edge and climbed inside, her heart hammering in her chest. The cold stone walls of the well pressed against her as she descended, the haunting wail of the sirens echoing above her like a final warning.

Clara's heart pounded in her stress as the sounds of bombs falling all around her drowned out the last of the wind blowing through the grass and the birds chirping in the trees. She screwed her eyes shut, her body tense as she tried to bury herself deeper into the stone well, “please just let it go away!” she murmured over and over again “Please please please”

And without warning, there was quiet, the birds started chirping and everything felt peaceful. Cautiously Clara opened her eyes and slid open the old lid, poking her head out, she looked around at the unblemished graveyard and the clear blue sky, everything was… perfect? It was like the bombings hadn’t just happened.

Hauling herself out of the well, and took a hesitant step forward, her boots scuffing the dirt path between the decrepit gravestones. If she’d have looked closer she’d have seen the names and realized that those moss covered granite stones no longer bore the same inscriptions they had mere moments ago, but everything looked the same, worn, overgrown and covered in wildflowers. How was this possible? Clara's mind raced, the dread slowly easing into curiosity. Maybe the bombs hadn’t hit here after all. Reaching the iron gate that marked the edge of the graveyard, she hesitated, glancing back toward the well. Maybe she should stay... But no, she had to check on Miko, on the flat, on what remained of her world.

She stepped through the gates her pulse quickening as she turned down what should've been the familiar path toward the flat. But the farther she walked, the stranger everything seemed. The cobbled streets, usually bustling with people and lined with shops, were gone. In their place was a sprawling grassy field, stretching out into the horizon. A long, winding stream cut through the landscape, its waters sparkling in the midday sun.

Clara stopped dead in her tracks. This wasn’t Alderwick…
