Aunrae's father (the drow) was exiled from the Underdark; after some time on the surface he met & fell in love with Aunrae's mother and they ended up living together happily for a while... until at some point while Aunrae was a young child the people in the nearby village decided they didn't want a drow living near them and a mob of them attacked Aunrae's parents' home. Her father was killed; she and her mother escaped, but separately, so her mother thinks she's dead. Aunrae was eventually found by a ranger from another town who took her in and raised her as a foster child and taught her some of his skills. She was generally happy there but wanted to know more about her true parents, especially her father, and when an opportunity to join an adventuring group investigating some drow-related incidents in the area she signed up. And so the campaign begins...

...oh and meanwhile Aunrae's mother was so sad & angry about what happened to her family that she ended up pretty much going evil and became a vigilante/bounty hunter with a grudge against the world in general and then wound up working for one of the BBEGs to track down this group of adventurers that kept thwarting their plans. Of course, this group is the same group that Aunrae is in, and both Aunrae and her mother think the other is dead, so... yeah. Plenty of fuel for ineresting drama throughout the entire campaign, if we ever play that far. :P
