The infamous chonk of New Zealand, the Kereru.
These big forest pigeons love to gobble the large fruit of the forest that can't be eaten by other animals, and because of that they are one of the most crucial animal species in NZ as they are solely responsible for spreading the seeds of the Karaka plant.
These birds used to be hunted for food, for obvious reasons.
But like many native animals in NZ they are now a threated species, with flocks consisting of only a couple to a small handful of birds.
Back before European settlement, Kereru flock could consist of 50 to more than 100 birds!
Now you'll be luckily to see more than 3 all together.
Thanks to ecosanctuaries, invasive species control and forest replanting. Kereru in specific locations around NZ are increasing in population.
Maybe one day they'll be back on the menu?
