Kuchisake-onna is a Japanese urban legend that dates back around 1000 years ago. The story goes that in ancient Japan, around 1000 years ago, a samurai was married to a beautiful woman. The woman often walked around town and asked any man that stared if they thought she was pretty. The samurai was not happy with what she was doing, and one day, he discovered that she was having an adultery with another man. He was so enraged that one day, armed with a knife, he slit her mouth ear to ear, leaving her with a bloody smile. Soon after that, she died either from the injury or by committing suicide, and returned to Earth as a vengeful spirit known as Kuchisake-onna (which translates into English as The Slit-Mouthed Woman). In 1976, the country was in a state of panic after many people have claimed to encounter Kuchisake-onna. People took extra precautions to avoid her because any encounter will be deadly. If you are walking alone, she will appear around the corner wearing a trench coat and surgical mask, and carrying a pair of scissors or some other sharp weapon. She will approach you and ask you a question in Japanese that translates into English as "Am I pretty?". If you answer the question with "no", she will kill you with her weapon. If you answer the question with "yes", she will remove her mask and ask you if you think she is pretty now (Again, she says it in Japanese). If you answer the second question with "no" or scream in terror, she will kill you. If you answer the second question with "yes", she will slit your mouth to match hers. Also, you can't run away from her because she can teleport. However, there are several different methods to help you survive an encounter with Kuchisake-onna. The most common method is: when she asks her question the first time, instead of saying yes or no, telling her that she is average (sometimes said by saying "so-so") will confuse her long enough for you to run away to safety. She has become so popular, she has even had movies made about her.
