Nicholas II (Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov), the eldest son of Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna, was born on May 18 (May 6, Old Style) 1868 in Tsarskoye Selo (now the city of Pushkin in the Pushkin District of St. Petersburg). Immediately after his birth, Nikolai was enrolled in the lists of several Guards regiments and appointed chief of the 65th Moscow Infantry Regiment.
