Otto von Bismarck - A native of the Junker nobility, Otto Bismarck studied in Berlin from the age of 12. After graduating from high school, he entered the University of Göttingen. The young nobleman did not shine with academic success, but he was noted for participating in many duels.
In 1847 Bismarck became an MP. During the period of political struggle in Germany, he established himself as a conservative, became the representative of Prussia in the union parliament. He strongly opposed the Austrian policy in German matters. Gradually, the court distanced itself from Bismarck and eventually sent him to St. Petersburg, and then to Paris.
The new Prussian king, to overcome the crisis, recalled Bismarck from Paris. Having received the post of head of government, the politician resolutely set about creating a unified German state.
Having suppressed internal resistance and dragged the state into several armed conflicts, Otto Bismarck ended the series of wars with the creation of the North German Confederation. He was elected chancellor. However, the rise of Germany caused fear among her neighbors. The French were especially concerned.
From a poorly trained militia, the chancellor prepared an excellent army with advanced military theory. The French army was defeated in 1871 and Germany became the leading power on the continent.
In 1871, Otto von Bismarck announced the creation of the Second Reich and remained its chancellor for almost 20 years. The unifier of Germany died in 1898.
