Contest Entry for Elicorne and O 2 's Culture Skin Contest!
For my entry, I chose to make a skin of my own culture's traditional clothing, the polish culture (Poland)!
Traditional clothing is a very important part of Poland's cultural heritage, and small differences in an outfit can hold clues about the person wearing it, from their age to their marital status to where in Poland they come from.
There are 8 main historic regions of Poland (therefore there are roughly 8 basic variations of a folk dress): Greater Poland, Lesser Poland, Pomerania, Prussia (including Warmia), Masovia, Kujawy, Podlasie, and Silesia.
In general, Polish traditional outfits have a lot of typically Slavic features: embroidery, colorful ribbons, wreaths made from fresh and artificial flowers, coral necklaces, male hats decorated with feathers, traditional Slavic leather footwear, wide leather belts, and many others. But at the same time, the folk dress of Poland is unique and striking.
The traditional clothes are not worn in everyday life but at folk festivals, folk weddings, religious holidays, harvest festivals, and other special occasions.
This skin, inspired by this picture, is from the Łowicz region of Poland, close to the capital Warsaw.
If you'd like to learn more in-depth about each region and its specific clothing, here are some links!
