Story
The sea was calm. John knew that the ship would have to depart in the morning for Sydney, but the horizon held his eyes until the sun set down the ocean.
“Hey, you okay?” A voice from behind said, making John jump. “Yeah, just cherishing the last moments,” he replied. “Okay, well you should go to bed soon,” said the ship’s chef, Leo. “Alright, thanks.” John turned back around to the sea and sighed. It was going to be tough, the next couple of months. He and the ship’s crew were about to try to break a record. Sail around the Earth in under 5 months, 21 days. It was risky, but John had always dreamed of this. His life goals would come true, or he would never see land again.
They were going to leave in the morning. John was the captain of the ship, so he would need a good night’s rest. “The rest of the crew are already asleep,” He thought to himself. He decided that this was a good stopping point in looking out to the horizon, so he came into the boat and went to bed. It was always a tradition for crew members to sleep in the boat the night before departure.



“Alright cap’n, rise and shine!” This had to be the voice of Barley, the assistant captain. “We’ve got a long day ahead ‘f us, firs’ is breakfast, then we have to wave g’bye to the people still on the land!” Barley exclaimed. “Alright, I’m getting up, I’m getting up.” John grumbled, still half awake. “The sea’s gettin’ a bit rowdy today, be careful!” Barley said while walking away. As he got up, John felt the ship rock a little. “Maybe Barley was right,” he said to himself. He headed toward the balcony of the ship and was surprised by what he saw. The sea was tossing and turning like it’s stomach was upset. Maybe today wasn’t the best day for departure. “C’mon captain, it’s time for the voyage!” John turned back around and remembered. The crew always had to saw goodbye to the people on land before they go. “Alright, I’m coming!” As he jogged to the top of the ship, he saw one final glance at the sea. This was dangerous.
When he arrived at the top, the people greeted him with clapping and hooting and hollering. He waved. The people always liked that. Soon after that, they were ready to go. “Alright, we should get going,” Barley whispered to John. “Okay, let’s wave one final goodbye first.” Right as he said it, John heard a crack. “Did you hear that?” John said to Barley. “Nah, the only thing I hear is screamin’ fans waitin’ for us to leave.” The waves seemed to get bigger and louder as the minutes ticked by. There was another crack. John started to get worried about his departure. “Barley, I’m starting to get worried. The dock seems to be cracking…” John muttered. “It’s prob’ly fine. We just have to get goin’, is all.” Barley replied.
What happened in the next 5 seconds was all so fast. The cracks on the dock enlarged. Soon, the dock was completely broken. The glee and happiness on the fan’s faces turned to shock and despair. The ship, however, stayed in place. It was a little shaky after the dock, but it was fine. Then, a huge wave, bigger than any person on the ship’s crew had seen before, came and swept the ship away. “What’s going on?!” Exclaimed John. The ship was moving. It was a tsunami. There were waves everywhere, water splashing and the ship rocking. Then, one final wave came out of nowhere, turning the ship on the side and ending it’s life. The crew were flung into the ocean, some never to be seen again.




John was alive. But drowning. He struggled for breath. His chest hurt. There was a shark. Everything was black and white. The shark opened his mouth. John tried to see straight. The shark’s open mouth revealed sharp teeth. This was it. John braced himself for impact. Then, nothing.
There was white. John was flying. There was light. He felt peaceful. Everything was calm. He was dead.
