In the year 1487, the Spanish captain Sancho Lopez was on a journey. After serving for many years in the Spanish navy, he had decided to desert the navy and make a living on his own. His goal was to discover one of the legendary chests of dubloons. As legend had it, these chests of dubloons were hidden on various hidden islands across the Great Sea, and those who found them would have neverending riches and would live the rest of their life in great fortune. Lopez, an evil and greedy man, was captivated by these legends, and made it his life's goal to discover one of these chests.
He searched for these treasures for many long years, until finally he found one of the legendary chests of dubloons. Despite having all the riches he could ever desire given to him in this chest, he wasn't happy; he had to have more. But the first search had taken him too long. He decided he must find a crew in order to reduce the time to find another. But in exchange for their services, the crew required that he split the profits. Years passed, and in time the crew was unable to find further treasure. To make matters worse, Lopez had thus far failed to pay his crew. Lopez, upset with the turn of events, blamed his failures to find more treasure on his crew; he considered them incompetent. He planned to leave them when the time was right in order to find a new, more capable crew. Escaping them could also provide a way to avoid paying them. However, his plans went awry when the crew finally snapped from impatience. The crew confronted him, and in his panic to avoid giving away his precious treasure, he deserted them in the night, fleeing as far as he could. But the crew chased him down, and upon reaching him, they confiscated the chest of dubloons and stole the treasure. In a final moment of rage, the Quartermaster reached Lopez, and smashed the chest upon his head.
Lopez, barely able to see and reduced to a feeble shell of a man, was left on an island alone. In his desperation to survive, he baited a sea turtle to shore where he stood, and was forced to consume it, sliding pieces in the few cracks in the chest.
