But if I could make a suggestion, maybe lighten his hair to a more blonde-ish color and make parts of it 3D so it looks like his hair really is shaggy.

i use gimp
i used to make really sucky skins on miners need cool shoes but i started using gimp, i got better, then i discovered a tutorial by DinowCookie and i got much better, after that i found another way to do the shading and then my skins became what they are currently.
